Upcoming Event: Greasemonkey Presentation

Hello, everyone! We're back from Spring Break and we have a smashing presentation coming up. This Tuesday, April 29th, our very own Ben Karel will be giving a demonstration of the Firefox extension called Greasemonkey, and a few other tools. Come learn how you can remix the Web to be the way you want it to be!

Note, this week's presentation will be in a different room than usual. We have Classroom A in the basement of Morris Library, instead of a room in Smith. That way, you can use the computers there and follow along!

Vanguard Review

Our Vanguard event was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who came!

Monday, March 3rd

Upcoming Event: Vanguard

Greetings, all! Our next event will be March 4th in room 204 Smith. UD alum Matthew Rein and others from Vanguard will give a presentation on Agile vs Waterfall software development models. This should be an interesting view of how real-world software gets developed in a company that manages over a trillion dollars in mutual fund assets.

And, if that doesn't float your boat, then maybe free pizza, soda, and the chance to network with a large local employer will!

Date: March 4th
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: SMITH HALL, room 203 -- UPDATED!

Friday, Feb. 8

Upcoming Events: HostMySite, Vanguard

Lou Honick, CEO of HostMySite.com, will talk about how HostMySite.com became the powerful, successful Web hosting company it is today. This is a great opportunity to meet Lou, ask him questions, and find out about jobs at HostMySite!
Date: February 19th
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: SMITH 221

Also, UD alum Matthew Rein and others from Vanguard will be coming to UD to talk about different software development processes.

Editor's note: Vanguard is a really, really cool company. I passed up an opportunity to see a talk from them last year, before I knew what they were all about. Huge mistake! If you like money, you'll love Vanguard. They're all about smart investing. The founder, John Bogle, championed the idea of investing with low-cost index funds. That's the financial equivalent of introducing the GUI, as far as I'm concerned.

Date: March 4th

Upcoming Speaker: Lori Pollock

The Computer Science Department's Lori Pollock will be giving the ACM a presentation of internship information from a plethora of national and international companies. Dr. Pollock acquired this information through meetings with representatives from these companies several weeks ago at the Grace Hopper conference. You should come to this meeting. Many Bothans died to bring you this information! Do not let their sacrifices be in vain. Finally, Dr. Pollock will also be discussing undergraduate research and the study abroad program.

The event will be held on November 27th at 7:30 PM in Smith 202. See you there, Red Leader!

Sunday, November 4

Upcoming Events

Coming up on November 13th, Prof. Rasmussen will give a behind-the-scenes look at several exciting robot contests he is involved with. First up is the DARPA Urban Challenge, which he is participating in as a member of Team Caltech with their robot "Alice". The Urban Challenge, scheduled for November 3, features autonomous cars maneuvering in a mock city environment with real traffic (and all-to-real crashes). Closer to home, he will also talk about UD's own robot "Warthog" and the IGVC small-robot competition. A student team took Warthog to IGVC for the first time last year, and next June we are going back to battle for the crown. See the Grand Challenge and IGVC websites for more information.

That event will be held in Smith 202 at 7:30 PM.

Also, the next day, November 14, UD will be hosting a seminar given by engineers from Sun Microsystems about Green Computing, Virtualization, ZFS, and more. This will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 PM in 102 Gore Hall.

Sunday, October 14

Upcoming Meetings

This Tuesday, October 16, come play Halo 2 with the ACM! From 8 to 10 pm, we'll be rocking the Xboxen on the projectors in Smith 221 (and possibly 220 as well).

Also, the next Web Development interest meeting will be at 7pm in Smith 102A, on Tuesday, October 23. It is a meeting for anyone interested in learning more about web development, and in working on web development projects.

  • Skyler Sully will talk about getting started with web development
  • Steve Mahoney will talk about jQuery
  • Special Guest: Fletcher King, VP at Morgan Stanley (to be confirmed)

Fletcher will talk about a project for which we are recruiting student volunteers--an opportunity to be involved in a high profile web development project.

Quantum Leap Presentation

Quantum Leap will present a rational planning system, running on top of an intelligent agents platform, in a military domain that is simulated via a 3D Game engine. This environment requires continual decentralized planning and plan oversight to support collaboration among autonomous agents (including human operators) in situations with realistic time constraints.

It is a pretty cool demo that shows both advanced computer science (the rational planning system is novel and covered in a recent patent application that we filed) with good gaming environment.

Accompanying will be David Cleaver and possibly Ethan Giordano (both UD CIS graduates) and Jen Samero, who is Quantum Leap's HR manager.
